Why We Want to Increase Trumpet Range

trumpet range (1)

You are here:

Why is the search item “How do I increase my trumpet range” one of the top searched items for trumpet players? There are psychological depths to this question that I’m sure have not been realized, but we can narrow down the fascination with the need to increase trumpet range to a few general statements.

Increased trumpet range is personal:

For the amount of time trumpet players spend worrying about range, you would think it is the most important aspect of performance to the audience. If you polled the audience, however, the range of the trumpet player would probably be nearly, if not totally, missing from their observation. A trumpet players range is personal. It is never really attainable which makes it a struggle at the personal level. It is attained only until you hear someone play higher, or a composer asks for a higher note, or more difficult entry into the range you think you can attain.

Increased trumpet range does not come naturally…for most:

If you are a high-range natural, skip to the next point. For the majority of us, in order to increase our trumpet range, we have to make sure we are doing a lot of other things correctly: correct breathing, correct air speed, correct tongue position, etc. For many of us, a lack of range is an indicator for what is unhealthy about our current playing and what other skills are waiting to be attained. While personally frustrating, tackling the root of range issues can improve all aspects of your playing.

Trumpet range mishaps are extremely noticeable:

As a trumpet player, I have always defended the stereotype that trumpet players have the biggest ego with the fact that our fails are the most noticeable. Trumpets are generally written to be heard. Especially where range is concerned, there is no hiding a missed or cracked note. It is loud, proud, and there is no hiding it in the section. I think for this reason, more than sound, dynamics, or technique, range is revered in our performances. Range frequently signifies the climax, most emotional or exciting part of the music and when you crack the note… it… is… noticed.

What Next?

Understanding that high range is more than ego – it is a necessity for our performance in many cases – should affect the way you look for answers. Take the ego, or emotion, out of your search for range and set logical, realistic, intent-filled goals. Your goals should include practice achievements, community involvement, and an expectation for slow, stepwise improvements. When you allow ego to enter, and remove intent from your journey, you will quickly run into a lot of frustration.
