Phil Green made a name for himself as a young euphonium player in the West Midlands within the UK during the early 1980s. In 1986 after a move to EE♭ Tuba, he became a founder member of Sovereign Brass and then his playing career took off. After 5 years with the band, during their impressive rise from 4th Section to Championship Section in 4 years, and having been a soloist of note in their concert and contest performances, Phil was tempted to join Desford Colliery Caterpillar Band and then to join Britannia Building Society Band (now Foden’s), where he held to Solo EE♭ Bass seat for 10 years and led one of the finest bass sections within the brass band movement.
After further periods at both Sovereign Brass and Flowers Band, Phil re-joined Foden’s in 2012 to be a part of the band that won a Double of becoming both British Open and National Champions that year. Phil is currently Solo EE♭ Bass and Chairman of Sovereign Brass.
Phil’s other passion is chamber group playing and since 1992 has been the tuba player of Holborne Brass Ensemble, a Midlands-based group ranging from 5 to 16 players to suit the concert and occasion. The group play around the UK with their eclectic mix of Baroque to Contemporary music, and at all times a nod towards the humorous.
Phil plays a one-off, hand-made tuba by Mark Carter with a Denis Wick Ultra AT4Y mouthpiece.
