Tom Challinor is a full-time professional trombonist in the Royal Corps of Army Music, currently based in Edinburgh and in his 15th year of service.
Now holding the rank of Sergeant, he was previously principal trombone position at The Band of the Coldstream Guards, Kings Division, British Army Band Catterick and most recently with The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
During his career, Tom has played at most major state ceremonial events in the UK, most recently playing at the state funeral of Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. He has toured Australia, Japan, USA and regularly features as a soloist.
In 2021, Tom was honoured to be awarded the ‘Royal Corps of Army Music Musician of the Year’, selected from 750 musicians. He organised masterclasses during the COVID pandemic, culminating in a masterclass with world renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi (New York Philharmonic). He regularly holds masterclasses with bands throughout British Army Music on practice techniques and exam performance.
Tom’s playing roots are firmly within the brass band movement. He has featured with the UK’s finest brass bands at all major contests and has held seats with Leyland Band and Desford Colliery Band. He has tutored on Brass Band courses including the Fermanagh/Tyrone Brass Band Summer School in Northern Ireland alongside Les Neish and Owen Farr.
Tom has also featured with Intrada Brass Ensemble and more recently toured Scotland with the acclaimed Scottish folk musician Phil Cunningham MBE. Tom is an artist with Michael Rath Trombones, based in Yorkshire, UK, and a Denis Wick Artist.
