Joan Palacio is a bass trombonist, fiscorn player and a teacher from Catalonia, Spain. He started to study music at the age of 9 playing valve trombone in the wind band of his neighborhood in Badalona, Barcelona. After overcoming a dystonia, he obtained an undergraduate degree at Conservatori Professional de Música de Badalona and later, a bachelor’s degree at Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya with Professor Raúl García. He also completed a postgraduate course focused on contrabass trombone and its orchestral repertoire.
As a classical performer he has played with Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, Banda Municipal de Barcelona, GIO Symphonia and Orquestra Clàssica d’Andorra among others. In jazz and modern music he has performed with great orchestras like Big Band de Terrassa, Canarias Big Band, Clasijazz Big Band, Big Band de Badalona and Big Acoustic Band.
He has played with conductors like Josep Pons, Franz-Paul Decker, Sebastian Weigle, Pablo González, Lutz Köhler, Antoni Ros-Marbà, Salvador Brotons, Enrique Mazzola, José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana and Diego Martín-Etxebarría among many others. Besides, he has had the honor of sharing stage and to accompany great soloists and musicians like Leo Nucci, Juan Diego Flórez, Montserrat Caballé, Carlos Núñez, Lluís Vidal, Joan Albert Amargós, Alice Sara Ott, Mischa Maisky, Ainhoa Arteta, Perico Sambeat and Dick Oatts.
He is currently bass trombonist at Franz Schubert Filharmonia (since 2010) and at Girona Jazz Project (since 2017). Since 2023 is a member of the cobla La Flama de Farners, playing fiscorn.
He has also more than 20 years of experience teaching at Conservatori Professional de Música de Badalona and at Escola de Música Moderna de Badalona. As a teacher, he has been invited by youth orchestras like Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, Jove Orquestra del Baix Penedès, Jove Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona and Jove Projecte Orquestral.
